I’ve had a really hard time thinking this week. I don’t know if it was because I was tired or sick or both, but I have struggled extremely hard with my own achy body and sluggish mind to get my work done. So my constant prayers have been, “Father, cause me to understand rightly; put your thoughts in my mind; make me creative and productive, show me how to do my work.”
I pray like this a lot anyway, but this week I have had no choice but to totally rely on God to get me through the hard thinking I’ve had to do.
With that in mind, I decided to quickly research some ways Scripture describes God’s dealings with the human mind. Here’s a bit of what I found out:
- God put skill (talent) into the minds of craftsman. Exodus 36:2
- God promised to strike his disobedient people with madness, blindness, and confusion of mind. Deuteronomy 28:28
- God gave Solomon a wise and discerning mind – a mind with understanding beyond measure and breadth – like the sand on the seashore. 1 Kings 3:12; 4:29
- God gave King Nebuchadnezzar the mind of a beast. Daniel 4:16
- God gave a demon-possessed man a right mind. Mark 5:15
- God opened minds to understand the Scriptures. Luke 24:45
- God gives those who do not see fit to acknowledge him up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. Romans 1:28
- God writes his laws on our minds. Hebrews 10:16
- God influences our minds through our hearts (our desires, motivations, and intentions). Revelation 17:17
So …
- If you need to learn a new skill – ask God.
- If you are confused – repent and ask God to cause you to apply his word to your situation so that you can think clearly.
- If you need wisdom – ask God for it.
- If you are out of your mind – hopefully someone will pray for you.
- If you don’t understand Scripture – ask God to give you understanding.
- If your mind is debased – perhaps someone will pray that you come to acknowledge God for who he is.
- If you want to know God’s revealed will – ask God to make you aware of it.
- If you want to do what is right – ask God to change your heart.
When I pray like this, depending on God for even my thoughts, God (not me) gets all the glory for any right thinking I do.
